Twenty-Eight Angry Men

The Ox-Bow Incident - Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Wallace Stegner

Technically this is a "Western", in that the setting is a small town in Nevada in 1885, but the plot could easily be transported to any other time or place. Really, it is a short parable about peer pressure, mob justice, and that primal urge to salve the pain of tragedy with swift and blinding punishment... even if said punishment happens to be inflicted on an innocent bystander.

This book should have been national assigned reading in the days after 9/11.
