One Singapore

One Singapore: 65 Stories by a Singaporean - Sin Tub Goh This is a collection of short fictional stories about daily life in modern Singapore. It wasn`t such a great pick for travel reading. Most of the stories (like the son who took a job abroad, and never wrote home to his mother) don`t particularly require Singapore as a setting; they could happen anywhere. The book won`t teach you anything about Singapore history either (and it doesn`t claim to). I guess there is kind of a Singapore feel to it... Singapore is a peaceful and affluent meltingpot of Chinese, Anglo, and Indian groups. In some ways, it is a model society, but the government has a severe and authoritarian side. Having been published in Singapore, don`t expect this book to comment on any of that.
