Letters from the Earth: Uncensored Writings - Mark Twain, Bernard DeVoto, Henry Nash Smith Religion as a setting device for parody- the subject matter is fertile with possibilities, but a lot hangs in the execution. The faithful may be easily offended, and nonbelievers may lose interest. There is only a small handful of authors I would expect to do this well, and Mark Twain is at the top of the list; he hits it just right. A good book for comparison is The Screwtape Letters - which has the same basic premise, but different results.
