Dmz: A Story of the Panmunjom Axe Murder

Dmz: A Story of the Panmunjom Axe Murder - Wayne Kirkbride In 1976, a handful of American and North Korean forces clashed in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. The incident lasted only a few minutes, but resulted in one American soldier being hacked to death with an axe. What issue brought these forces to violence? Trimming a tree. Specifically, trimming tree branches which were obscuring the view between two U.N. watchtowers. The incident seems to have faded from popular memory, but it was a melee which could easily have escalated to all-out war. Kirkbride was working on the U.N. base at the time, and he does a fair job of filling in the background information, paying due homage to the man who died in the line of duty, and giving a sense of what it was like to be there during those tense few weeks surrounding the incident.
