Among all the other rotten things he was doing during WWII, Heinrich Himmler was also negotiating secret peace deals behind his boss Adolph Hitler's back. It sounds ridiculous now, but I guess he thought that he could manage to hold on to power in post-war Germany. Obviously this sort of thing is treason and would normally be punishable by death, but it looks like behind the scenes, Himmler's power was beginning to rival Hitler's. It's well known that Hitler had health problems, and his doctor had him hooked on pain killers. If the war hadn't come to a close earlier, maybe Himmler would have eclipsed Hitler for leadership of the Reich, and he would have conducted these negotiations openly. I'm not sure what all of this means, but it is interesting to think about.
